Abstract

Public theology has been discussed since the 1970’s and in Germany since 2000. Its relevance to free churches is investigated here in 6 theses: that theology is essentially public; that public theology is generally understandable; that it leads to public action; that public theologies are multifactorially located in the area of theology; public theology differentiates between various public domains; and that public theology requires an ecumenical direction owing to the global interconnectedness of public life. The basic approach of public theology is seen as fruitful for future discussions because of its overlapping with themes and concerns of free church theology.
