In view of the growing Muslim population in Germany and the rest of Europe, the question arises as to the participation of the Muslim communities in the democratic life of state and society, which is often made difficult owing to prejudices among native Europeans and Moslems, which are often aggravated by the media. The author points to the various confessions, ethnic cultures and devotional forms, as well as differing concepts on the essentials of Islam and the Sharia law, to show that Islam is not a monolithic block, but has many streams. Some of these are capable of adapting to democratic social structures. The Christian churches are encouraged to support actively such Muslims and their communities who wish to engage with and participate in democratic processes.
