Abstract

The author describes religious indifference in its characteristics and definitions, historical development and current extent in Germany. Basic approaches for meeting this challenge for church and mission are „convivence“ with the idea of „helping each other, learning from one another and celebrating with each other“; transformational theology, by which the church should take part in forming society by strategically acting on the structural roots and beginnings of injustice; and comparative theology, which rejects determining strict boundaries between religions and aims at dialogue, where a meeting as equals is aspired to. The approaches of Fresh Expressions and the emerging churches are also described, as well as the role of the pastors who should let themselves be led by God and also from their neighbours.
