Abstract

This paper discusses the development and reasons for a modification to the Baptist confession of faith used by the German, Swiss and Austrian Baptists. The section in question deals with the relationship between Christians and Israel, or respectively, the Jews. In a first part, the historical perspective of the Baptists towards Israel is described, from a wilful ignoring of the question after the Second World War towards a recognizing and confession of German guilt in this war and the holocaust. In the second part the new version of the confession of faith from 2019 is contrasted with the older version from 1977 and explained. In particular, every appearance of a substitution theology is rejected, and the common roots and worth of the people of Israel and the Christian Church are emphasized. Finally, the authors make plain that the theological reflections on this matter are not concluded, but that remaining questions must be thought through.
