Abstract

The Editio Critica Maior (ECM) is a quest to produce an accurate approximation to the initial text of the New Testament with a comprehensive collection and display of variant readings, using computer-based documentation of the manuscripts and citations in many languages from the first millenium. A methodological innovation is the use of the Coherence-Based Genealogical Method, an iterative process supported by computer analysis, which draws out the dependencies among the variant readings. The first results for the Catholic Epistles and Acts have already been published and the remaining volumes will be made available in the next decades. This will allow biblical scholars greater insight in the textual tradition of the New Testament from Its beginnings up to Byzantine times and an understanding of the decisions made in arriving to a hypothesis of the initial text.
