Abstract

The realisation that churches in Europe are not system-relevant is but a small symptom of the profound movement of secularisation during the last centuries that has been analysed by Lesslie Newbigin, Charles Taylor and others. The gap between church and post- Christian culture can be illustrated by four external (intellectual) barriers of the gospel, which are accepted as “facts” in western society. Liberal and orthodox strategies of the churches to bridge the gap are promising only in a limited way. The author recommends to tackle the internal barriers of the gospel and pleads for a new passion for the super-natural in the everyday life (re-enchantment, Paul Gould), which will by itself regenerate the social attractiveness of the Christian way of life.
