Abstract

A reappraisal of the pastoral metaphors in the Bible is necessary, because the contemporary role of the pastor is often ambiguous and controversial. These metaphors describe God, leaders of Israel in the Old Testament and those of the New Testament church. The image picks up the reality of life of the original hearers. Even today, when rather softer connotations are perceived, the pastoral image contains strong and assertive aspects of leadership. This article compares and contrasts the somewhat romantic notions of pastoral service with biblical references concerning the real tasks of a shepherd, and draws out the tasks and character requirements of a church pastor today. The metaphor of the shepherd is still challenging and inspirational, but one should avoid an unreflected and exaggerated use of the metaphor.
