The Charta Oecumenica was compiled as a primarily European document in 2001 and was signed by representatives of the Roman Catholic Church and the Conference of European Churches. It confesses the universal Church of Christ, calls for fellowship among the churches and emphasises the responsibility of European Christians for the development of Europe. Among its political tasks, reconciliation and the preservation of creation are particularly highlighted. The Charta calls for fellowship with Judaism and relations with Islam. It holds its obligations to conducting dialogue and maintaining cooperation, can offer orientation and stimulation in national contexts, and contribute to the development of the spiritual heritage of Christianity as an inspirational force for the benefit of Europe.
