Abstract

For a better understanding of Paul, it is useful to consider his thought in the context of early Judaism. This paper examines the question of the participation of the gentiles in Israel’s relationship to God using Romans 15:7-13; a summary of arguments from the Old Testament on this theme, and the animal apocalypse of 1 Enoch. The motives of the New Jerusalem, the messianic figure and the correlation of primeval times with the end times are compared. This comparison shows how deeply Paul’s thought was rooted in early Judaism, without simply accepting nor rejecting all of its ideas.
