Abstract

Besides the canonical books of the Bible, and the apocryphal books included in the Catholic translations, there is a large body of writings known as the Pseudepigrapha, so called, because they mostly falsely claim to have been written by well-known biblical figures. These writings can be classified as: apocalypses; testaments; expansions of biblical writings; wisdom and philosophical writings; and prayers, psalms and odes. Examples are given for each type and newer discoveries from Qumran are described. In conclusion, the author discusses the importance of the Pseudepigrapha in the life of the early church and their relevance in understanding the Bible.
