Abstract

The author, who is a theologian, journalist and song writer, gives an autobiographical overview of his own encounters with Christian songs of differing origins. He experienced as formative the singing of old hymns, Christian youth songs, revival songs, Christian pop songs as well as modern worship songs. Significant thereby were the manifold spiritual and pedagogical orientations. The changed economic conditions of music production has affected Christian music too (downloads and streaming), so that publishers are less willing to finance productions in advance. The long term effects of this are not yet clear. Church congregations should strive for a reconciled variety in their musical repertoire. Narcissistically oriented texts of the nature of a feel-good gospel are nevertheless problematic.
